SUMMARY:[Seminar] ReArm Europe and the Rule of Law
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 15 April\, from 12:30-14:00\, the IEE at Saint-Louis Bruxelles and the EUMERGENCIES Centre of Excellence have the pleasure of welcoming León Castellanos-Jankiewicz (Asser Institute)\, Alina Carrozzini (VU Amsterdam/Kings College)\, and Letizia Bozzi (Asser Institute) to discuss their joint publication ReArm Europe and the Rule of Law. \nIn this article\, the authors take a critical look at the European Union’s crisis-driven approach to rearmament policy\, arguing that it is often aimed at achieving short-term goals\, sometimes at the expense of comprehensive democratic oversight. The authors identify significant due process and accountability gaps in the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) and the European Defence Omnibus and argue that addressing these gaps and shortcomings can contribute to democratic accountability and the protection of fundamental rights in an increasingly militarised EU.Link to full article and abstract \nRead the Full Publication\nThe research presented during this seminar is published in the journal EDSeQ (1/2026). You can access the full abstract and the complete article via the link below: \n👉 Read the Full Article on Lexxion.eu \nPractical Informations\n\nSpeakers: León Castellanos-Jankiewicz (Asser Institute)\, Alina Carrozzini (VU Amsterdam/Kings College)\, and Letizia Bozzi (Asser Institute)\nDiscussant: Elsa Bernard (Université de Lille)\nWhere: P02 (UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles\, Préfecture Building\, entrance via Rue Du Marais 119\, 1000 Brussels) or Online\nWhen: 12h30-2:00 PM (lunch from 12:00)\nRegistration: free but mandatory\, please register through this from

SUMMARY:[Seminar] (Beyond) Flight or Fight? Young peoples’ responses to the climate emergency
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nResponses to the climate emergency are often categorised in terms of flight or fight – but how do institutions at different levels frame such emergencies for young people and enable or impede their capacities for effective action? \nThis communication presents analysis from multiple ongoing studies on how institutions\, from a local/national level to international arenas\, enable or hinder young people’s engagement with the climate emergency. The first section presents Katharine Throssell’s research exploring the role of education and curriculum in transmitting understandings of the climate crisis\, and the question of whether these institutional responses tend to encourage young people’s engagement and self-efficacy on this issue or distance them from it. The second section presents Barbara Monticelli’s research on how institutional governance processes support youth participation and effectiveness in international climate decision-making processes (“fight”)\, or\, on the contrary\, create barriers to their inclusion (“flight”). \n\nSpeakers\n\nBarbara Monticelli (IULM University / UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles)\nKatharine Throssell (MSCA Fellow\, UCLouvain Saint-Louis – Bruxelles)\n\nDiscussant\n\nJoost de Moor (FNRS Research Associate\, UCLouvain)\n\n Venue: Room Salle Du Conseil \n Date: Thursday 9 April 2026 \n Time: 12:30 – 2:00 PM \n Registration: Register here

SUMMARY:[Séminaire] La politique des visas. Filtrer les mobilités internationales en Chine et en Algérie
DESCRIPTION:(This event is hold in French) \nThis seminar is part of a series of seminars on migration management in Europe.\nThis particular session highlights the work of our colleague Juliette Dupont\, who will present her publication: La Politique des Visas. Filtrer les mobilités internationales (Edition Du Croquant\, 2025) \nDetails about the book\nFocusing on visa policy\, this book sheds new light on the sorting of foreigners: why are 90% of visa applications in China accepted\, while in Algeria\, one in two applications is refused? To understand how one nationality is privileged and another deprived of mobility\, this book draws on an unprecedented survey of the French consulates in Beijing and Algiers\, expatriate offices where bureaucracy and diplomacy intertwine. It reveals that visas act as a filter at borders\, the intensity of which varies according to the desired objective – tourist appeal in China and migration control in Algeria. On a daily basis and in the field\, agents classify applications as desirable or undesirable\, and applicants comply with\, resist or subvert these administrative obstacles. Through the visa\, this book seeks to question the production\, legitimisation and contestation of global inequalities in movement. \nRegistration\nPlease register yourself through this form. \nMedia
