SUMMARY:[Seminar] ReArm Europe and the Rule of Law
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, 15 April\, from 12:30-14:00\, the IEE at Saint-Louis Bruxelles and the EUMERGENCIES Centre of Excellence have the pleasure of welcoming León Castellanos-Jankiewicz (Asser Institute)\, Alina Carrozzini (VU Amsterdam/Kings College)\, and Letizia Bozzi (Asser Institute) to discuss their joint publication ReArm Europe and the Rule of Law. \nIn this article\, the authors take a critical look at the European Union’s crisis-driven approach to rearmament policy\, arguing that it is often aimed at achieving short-term goals\, sometimes at the expense of comprehensive democratic oversight. The authors identify significant due process and accountability gaps in the European Defence Industry Programme (EDIP) and the European Defence Omnibus and argue that addressing these gaps and shortcomings can contribute to democratic accountability and the protection of fundamental rights in an increasingly militarised EU.Link to full article and abstract \nRead the Full Publication\nThe research presented during this seminar is published in the journal EDSeQ (1/2026).
