[Roundtable] Activism in the context of emergency: The rise of violence against environmental defenders in the EU

2 March @ 17:15 - 18:45

This roundtable addresses the critical situation of environmental defenders facing increasing pressure across Europe. In the current climate emergency, the protection of environmental activism and fundamental rights is more vital than ever. Our experts will discuss why violence against environmental defenders is rising in the EU and what legal mechanisms can be used to ensure the safety of those practicing civil disobedience for the planet.

About the speaker

This event bridges the gap between academic research and field experience. We will analyze the escalation of violence against environmental defenders, its impact on climate movements, and the legal and social mechanisms used to respond to this repression.

Featured Speakers:

  • Olivia Fleuvy Campaign Manager for Climate Justice and Freedom of Expression and Association (Amnesty International)
  • Marie Jadoul (UCLouvain): Researcher specializing in civil disobedience within the context of ecological emergencies.
  • Antoine Durance (Sciences Po Bordeaux): Researcher focusing on the use of law for protest purposes and the support of environmental defenders.

This session is integrated into the POLLEN Master’s programme, offering a unique opportunity for students and the public to engage with experts on one of the most pressing challenges to European democracy.
