We are pleased to announce the publication of a new book by our colleague, Amandine Orsini, titled Youth and Earth Politics: From Misconceptions to Potential for Synergy, published by Cambridge University Press. The work is available in Open Access until June 29.
Youth and Earth Politics From Misconceptions to Potential for Synergy
About the Book
In global politics, youth—defined as individuals between 16 and 35—play a significant role in Earth politics. Representing a numerical majority of the global population and residing largely in countries most vulnerable to environmental shifts, they are central to the implementation of the global environmental agenda.
Despite this importance, the political role of youth in international environmental negotiations is often subject to various misconceptions. This Element identifies and examines five of these misconceptions, drawing on more than 200 interviews and field observations at international climate, biodiversity, and sustainable development negotiations.
Moving beyond common characterizations of youth as apathetic, inexperienced, or elitist, the research explores how understanding their identities can foster new synergies for stronger, more inclusive, and intersectional political action.
